Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel says he couldn't help but feel for his former manager Sir Alex Ferguson as he sat with him during the Red Devils' comprehensive defeat by Liverpool.

Arne Slot's Reds ran out 3-0 winners at Old Trafford on Sunday thanks to a first half brace from Luis Diaz and a second half strike from Mo Salah, who scored his 10th goal for the club at Old Trafford.

The defeat leaves United with two defeats from their three matches this season as pressure mounts on manager Erik ten Hag after the club's decision to stick with him over the summer.

By contrast Ten Hag's Dutch compatriot Slot has enjoyed a stunning start to life at Liverpool since replacing Jurgen Klopp, winning all three of his Premier League matches so far without conceding a goal.

Former United goalkeeper Schmeichel kept Ferguson company in the Old Trafford stands during the match, and said the hosts' result and performance wasn't befitting of everything the 13-time Premier League winning manager achieved.

“I was sat with Sir Alex today, it was really sad,” the Dane told Premier League Productions. "What he did for this football club. Everything that we enjoyed. The great times. Everything.

“To sit with him and he is watching this. That, for me, is really, really sad that he is watching that. He did something really extraordinary with this football club. All of that is not there anymore.”

Fellow Premier League Productions pundits Michael Owen and Paul Scholes feel the result showed how quickly Slot has adapted at Liverpool, and backed the Reds to push for the title this season.

"There was hardly any outgoings, it was a structured squad and he was walking into a squad that has a lot of players at the peak of their powers," said Owen.

"There were questions about Liverpool but after three games you think “wow” it is going to take a special team to stop them. They have just swatted United aside."

"They could really challenge for that title this year," Scholes added. "Before a ball had been kicked I thought it was going to be Arsenal ’s year to give City a real go and possibly go on to win it. But after watching the first three games, I think Liverpool could go past Arsenal."
