Residents of a South Dublin village were stunned to see a Hollywood legend rush to help a man following a "vicious fight" outside a local pub over the weekend.

Steve Buscemi is in Dublin filming the new series of Netflix smash hit Wednesday. The Sopranos, Fargo and Reservoir Dogs star has been spotted around Dalkey in recent weeks and was eating in a restaurant in the area on Saturday evening.

Fellow diner Oisín Heavey told the Irish Independent no one recognised the 66-year-old while he was enjoying his meal but he noticed a commotion outside the restaurant just as Buscemi left. He said: "We could see there were loads of people outside, kind of looking up towards where he had gone, so we assumed he was spotted.

"When we went outside, there was actually a very vicious fight going on, and that’s what everybody was looking at."

Mr Heavy added that the Boardwalk Empire star stood unnoticed while the fight went on but did then go and try to help a man who had been knocked to the ground during the incident. “He was very close to it, but he held himself back from breaking it up," he said.

"He stood over the guy on the ground for a few seconds, and the fight naturally broke up after that. Some people said he broke up the fight, but he didn’t. He tried to help, which is more than most people would do."

Buscemi was injured after he intervened in a bar fight in North Carolina in 2001. He suffered cuts to his head and neck as well as defensive wounds to his hands after he was attacked with a knife in Wilmington bar the Firebelly Lounge while filming Domestic Disturbance.

Student Timothy Fogerty was later sentenced to 180 days for the attack although Mr Buscemi had appealed to the judge not to impose a straight sentence as he wanted Fogarty to be given help with possible substance and psychiatric issues.
