Viewers of the BBC Olympic Games 2 024 coverage were left stunned as coverage was interrupted by cleaners.

People watching the Paris 2024 event on Saturday saw presenter Hazel Irvine joined by pundit Tonia Couch as they discussed the diving event when two men appeared outside. Hazel was fast to act as she made a joke about the distracting moment as she asked: "Can you see this behind me? Because we've got two gentlemen fixing our studio. I don't think they know they're on telly at the moment!"

The men went about their work completely oblivious to the fact they were interrupting the live broadcast as baffled viewers then took to X to comment on what they were seeing. Many joked about the "new event" as they commented on the disruption on the social media site.

One viewer wrote: "Live Olympic window cleaning on the BBC!" A second pointed out: "Window cleaners have just turned up on the BBC coverage." A third commented: "Just a casual bit of window cleaning in the middle of the BBC coverage." A fourth social media user noted: "The rain is still TIPPING down in Paris. And now the BBC have had to get the window cleaners in whilst they’re on air." A fifth quipped: "I didn't know window cleaning now qualified as an Olympic sport."

Viewers couldn't believe their eyes

The interruption came after fans hit out at BBC producers over opting to use a green screen to create a backdrop for a chat earlier in the day. The footage saw presenter Jeanette Kwakye joined by JJ Chalmers and Fred Sirieix as they got coverage for the day underway.

While the conversation got started in the studio, it wasn't long before a CGI backdrop of a courtyard in the city was used to serve as the background for their chat. Viewers found the move baffling and slammed the decision considering the production team are currently in one of the most famous cities in the world with a studio based in front of the iconic Eiffel Tower.

One criticised the move as they wrote on X: "This green screen stuff is horrific. Stop it. You've got a studio in Paris looking at the Eiffel Tower ffs." Meanwhile, Team GB have already won two medals so far in Paris.

Cyclist Anna Henderson bagged a silver in the women's individual time trial, while divers Yasmin Harper and Scarlett Mew Jensen took the bronze medal for their efforts in the women's synchronised 3m springboard. Swimmer Adam Peaty meanwhile looks almost guaranteed to take home a model in the men's 100m breaststroke final on Sunday after placing first in his semi-final on Saturday.
