A small number of people gathered at a site in Coolock earmarked for refugees as members of Gardaí maintained a presence in the area.

Approximately 40 people gathered at the former factory in Coolock, which has seen a multitude of anti-immigration protests over recent weeks, after reports circulated online that a protest would be held at the site.

Concrete barriers were erected outside of the vacant building after a series of anti-immigration protests resulted in multiple incidents of criminal damage including a JCB digger burnt and the building set alight a number of times.

The recent protests also saw a number of violent clashes with Gardaí, which resulted in violent clashes between authorities and protesters, who fired missiles at Gardaí. Last week Gardaí found petrol bombs near the site as they continue their investigation into the incidents of criminal damage.

Although Saturday’s protest attracted a small number of people, who waved tri-colours, those gathered at the site were reportedly not members of the Coolock Says No group.

A member of the Coolock Says No group spoke with Dublin Live earlier on Saturday, who insisted the locals have no involvement in a demonstration on the Malahide Road.

Gardaí borrowed two water cannon trucks from the PSNI ahead of the protest on Saturday but confirmed that no incidents had been reported at the protest.

A Garda spokesperson told the Irish Mirror: “Gardaí maintain a presence at a premises on the Malahide Road, Dublin 17, this evening, Saturday 27 July 2024. No incidents have been reported at this time.”
