More than 70% of the project in the Tal-Barrani area has been completed, the Ministry for Transport, Infrastructure, and Public Works said in a statement on Thursday.

It added that Infrastructure Malta is continuing with the project for the reorganisation of the infrastructure around five junctions aimed at improving the flow of traffic in the Tal-Barrani area, Tarxien, and Bulebel.

In a visit to the work site, engineers from Infrastructure Malta said that the work will now be focused on Triq San Anard/Triq il-Gudja, and that an addition of 500 square metres of landscaping is expected as part of the project with the road being rebuilt. The Ministry said that a new temporary traffic plan will be announced for this purpose, with the plan coming into effect from September 3rd until the beginning of the school year.

As part of this plan, the Ministry said that vehicles driving in the direction from Zabbar/Fgura to Tarxien/Marsa must pass through Triq Hal-Tarxien and continue through Triq tal-Hotba and then turn to their right. For vehicles driving from Zabbar/Fgura towards Zejtun/Birzebbuga, the Ministry said that these must pass through Triq tal-Hotba and then turn left. For vehicles driving from Tarxien/Marsa towards Fgura/Zabbar, these are to continue passing through Triq San Anard/Triq il-Gudja.

The Ministry said that the reconstruction work in Triq Hal-Tarxien has been completed over the last few days, and that this work includes a lane dedicated to bicycles. It added that other works carried out include a new drainage system which extends between Triq tal-Hotba towards Triq San Anard, the placement of telecommunications services, and the rebuilding of a sidewalk between Triq tal-Hotba and Triq San Anard. It continued that there was also the placement of services and the construction of a sidewalk in Triq Hal-Tarxien, as well as the rebuilding of Triq tal-Hotba which included the installation of telecommunications and water services along with new electricity distribution.

Regarding the service road in Tal-Barrani, the Ministry said that excavation and foundation work was done along with the completion of the frame on a new wall to form a third lane in the direction from Tarxien to Bulebel.

Transport and Infrastructure Minister Chris Bonett said that this project is taking place with the aim of better organisation of the area to better facilitate the journey of drivers, cyclists, and anyone else who uses this road from the south of Malta.

He said that upon the project’s completion, a new system of traffic lights will be integrated with each other with the aim of making traffic management more effective. “These will also include new pedestrian crossing points for those who frequent the area, to make the area safer for those who use them,” the Minister said.

The Ministry concluded that discussions were also held with Public Transport regarding the permanent route once the project is completed, “including more accessible bus stops.”
