Ġnien Carmelo Dimech in Mosta has more than 1,600 square meters of open space. Its regeneration focused on sustainability and community involvement. This project was completed and inaugurated through the combined efforts of Ambjent Malta, Public Works, and the Mosta Local Council, the government said.
This garden was inaugurated by the Minister for the Environment, Energy and Regeneration of the Grand Harbour Miriam Dalli, the Parliamentary Secretariat for Public Works Omar Farrugia, and Mosta Mayor Joseph Gatt together with Mosta local councillors.
This project is part of ongoing efforts by Ambjent Malta and Public Works to improve public spaces and promote environmental sustainability. The garden now includes drought-tolerant plants, drip irrigation, and mulching to conserve water and prevent soil erosion. Over 3,000 seasonal plants, trees, and shrubs have been added to enhance the garden's environment.
Key features of the project include a water reservoir with a capacity of over 100 cubic meters, designed to collect stormwater and improve water management in the garden. The space now also features a solar-powered paving system which powers the garden's water pumps and lighting. A new playground structure that creates renewable energy from children's movements, has also been installed.
Minister Miriam Dalli highlighted the essential role of open spaces in enhancing community life. "The transformation of Ġnien Carmelo Dimech is a testament to our vision for public areas prioritizing sustainability. By creating safe and beautiful spaces, we empower communities to thrive and connect, making every neighbourhood a better place to live and grow," said Minister Dalli.
Parliamentary Secretary Omar Farrugia emphasised that this new open space project is one of the first projects co-financed under the Framework Agreement signed with local councils in recent months. "This Framework, in addition to supporting Maltese local councils, is committed to creating a better quality of life for the public," said Parliamentary Secretary Farrugia.
The upgraded garden is now open 24/7 and features smart benches, Wi-Fi, CCTV coverage, and a drinking water fountain, making it a safe and accessible space for everyone in the community.
Ġnien Carmelo Dimech in Mosta is one of the open spaces that the Ministry for the Environment, Energy and Regeneration of the Grand Harbour through its entities worked on, which includes Ġnien ta' fuq il-Glażiż in Birgu, Bengħajsa Family Park in Birżebbuga, Romeo Romano Garden in Santa Venera, San Filippu Garden in Floriana, Victor Calvagna Garden in Mosta, Rnella Garden in Kalkara, the extension of San Klement in Zabbar, the pollinator Garden in San Ġwann and Ta' Ġawhar Picnic Area & Dog Park in Safi, amongst others. Meanwhile, preparations are ongoing on various projects in different locations: Santa Lucija, Mellieħa, Ħal Lija, Ħal Luqa, and Ħal Kirkop.
