Health Minister Jo Etienne Abela said that an independent inquiry will take place following the death of a man in the waiting room at Mater Dei Hospital's Accident and Emergency (A&E) department.

Stephen Mangion (photo above) died on Tuesday evening.

In a post on Facebook, the minister said he understood the anger and disappointment of the relatives and friends of Stephen Mangion.

He said that apart from a magisterial inquiry that was lauched, an independent inquiry will scrutinise the procedures employed at the hospital.

He said he ensured the utmost transparency and promised that shortcomings will be addressed.

In a statement, the Health Ministry said that the independent inquire was established on Wednesday as per the Inquiries Act. The Board leading the independent inquiry is made up of Dr J.D. Camilleri as Chairperson, and Dr Herbert Felice u Mrs Sylvia Spiter as its members. "The conclusion of this inquiry is expected by no later than the end of September. The ministry is committed to treating this case with complete transparency in the spirit of good governance."

Abela was reacting to social media posts by former Opposition Leader Adrian Delia and former MP Jason Azzopardi that a man had died in the waiting room at the A&E department of the hospital as he was waiting to be seen while complaining of chest pains.

Mangion's niece, Claire Mangion, posted on social media. "My dearest uncle Stephen Mangion was asked to wait and wait even though he had chest pain until he collapsed and died at the emergency of Mater Dei. A failed system that needs to change," she said.
