Local North Roscommon Councillor Sean Moylan said the area gives it condolences to the young man and his family. He said: “It’s another tragic accident at this difficult time when children are going back to school and the evenings are getting darker.

"It's very sad to see a young person killed. Our thoughts and prayers in the area are with the lady and the passenger in the other car, we hope they make a speedy recovery. Our thoughts are with the family of the deceased at a very difficult time.”

Local TD for the Sligo/Leitrim constituency Frank Feighan said: “It’s so tragic and so sad and it’s a huge shock to the community.

“My thoughts and prayers are with the family of the young man who has died and I hope the passengers in the other car recover as quickly as possible. The community is very very upset at this tragic incident.”
