A father has told of his pride after his son was named in the Republic of Ireland's U19 squad.

Jacob Devaney has linked up with the U19s ahead of their clashes with France, Kazakhstan and Slovenia this week.

The 17-year-old's dad Martin, who is Barnsley's assistant head coach, took to social media to tell how Jacob's grandfather "will be smiling from above".

He wrote: "We are delighted. Jacob to represent Ireland. As a family so proud! Grandad will be smiling from above."

The midfielder trained with United’s first-team last season and is currently part of their development squad, which is coached by ex-Ireland defender Paul McShane.

U19 manager Tom Mohan has also named St Patrick's 16-year-old star Mason Melia in his squad after his impressive performances for the Saints in recent months.

However, the forward will only link up with the squad after the France game due to St Pat's clash with Dundalk on Thursday.
