Ireland is on the verge of a welcome 'Indian summer' this weekend, with warm and sunny conditions set to sweep the country. Met Eireann has forecast a surge in temperatures, well above the seasonal average, bringing a taste of late summer just as the meteorological autumn has begun.

Starting on Friday, the country will see a significant rise in temperatures, reaching up to 25C in some areas. The warm spell is expected to continue throughout the weekend, which will be welcomed by many after the recent unsettled weather.

But as quickly as the 'Indian summer' arrives, it could be gone. Dramatic new weather maps suggest a temperature rollercoaster, with a sharp U-turn, is on the horizon. While this weekend will bring highs of 25C, weather models - which are subject to change this far out - show that by next Thursday, highest daytime temperatures could drop to just 11C - a stark 14C difference in a matter of days.

Met Eireann has also weighed in on this potential weather shift, cautioning that "fresher conditions will feed into the north and northwest areas on Sunday". It added that for next week, "overall it is expected to be cooler than normal with a predominately northerly or northeasterly airflow".

Giving a day-by-day breakdown of what to expect over the coming days, the national forecaster highlighted that thunderstorms are possible alongside the "warm and humid" spell.

Its forecast reads: "A mix of cloud and sunny spells with passing showers Wednesday, most frequent across Ulster and Leinster, some heavy or prolonged with the chance of lightning and local hail later. Cool for early September with highs of 13C to 16C in mostly moderate northwest winds. Heavy thundery showers will mainly affect eastern counties on Wednesday evening. On Wednesday night showers will become isolated but with mist and fog developing locally. Lows of 7C to 11C , in light to moderate northeast winds.

"Thursday will be a predominantly dry day with sunny spells across the western half of the country and somewhat cloudier skies elsewhere. During the evening showery rain will begin to feed into east and southeast areas. Highs of 17C to 20C, warmest further west. Northeast winds will be mostly moderate in strength, strong at times along eastern coasts. Some showery rain across eastern and southern counties Thursday night with dry conditions elsewhere. Mild and humid with lows of 12C to 15C in moderate northeasterly winds.

"Warm and humid Friday with spells of sunshine occurring widely. However, thundery rain will possibly affect southern counties, especially coastal areas. Highs of 21C to 25C in moderate northeasterly winds. Rather warm and close overnight Friday, with the chance of thunderstorms across southern and eastern areas. Some fog in places too. Lows of 12C to 16C , in light northeast winds.
