Gardaí have arrested five people as part of an operation targeting persons who are illegally residing in the State and are the subject of deportation orders.

As part of Operation Fern, Gardaí from the Garda National Immigration Bureau (GNIB) conducted a number of operations in the Dublin region on September 2 and 3.

Four people, non-EU nationals, who were subject to deportation orders were arrested in the Dublin region. All four are currently in custody pending deportation from the State in due course.

Separately, one male, a non-EU national, was arrested in Wexford during an operation under Operation Fern in July. This male was subsequently deported from the State in August 2024.

Speaking this morning following the operation, Detective Chief Superintendent Aidan Minnock said: "In the past week, the Garda National Immigration Bureau have conducted a number of operations under Operation Fern to remove persons from the State subject to deportation orders.

"These persons declined the opportunity to avail of voluntary return to their country of origin, following significant engagement with the Department of Justice.

"Having declined voluntary return they were issued with a deportation order, and are now in custody pending removal from the State.

"These operations illustrate GNIB's ongoing capacity to, where necessary, take action to remove persons from the State who no longer have authority to remain."

Operation Fern is a nationwide operation targeting persons subject to deportation orders. A deportation order is an order issued by the Minister for Justice requiring a person to leave the State, having not met the requirements for international protection status.

Prior to GNIB receiving these Deportation Orders, there has been significant engagement with the Department of Justice around the opportunity to avail of voluntary return, but these persons have not availed of this opportunity.

An Garda Síochána, through the GNIB and Divisional Immigration Officers, provide immigration services for the Department of Justice.

In July 2024, the Minister for Justice announced that the Department of Justice will take over the immigration registration (administrative) function from An Garda Síochána.

The transfer of administrative immigration duties will relieve up to 100 existing Garda Immigration officers of those administrative duties to concentrate on investigative and enforcement immigration duties, within their divisions.
