The number of people detected using mobile phones while driving is already up 11 per cent on last year, Gardaí have confirmed to the Irish Mirror.

The revelation on the figures comes amid ongoing pleas from senior Gardaí and the Government for people to stop using devices while driving.

Figures provided to the Irish Mirror by An Garda Síochána following queries on the number of fines issued showed that 11,129 people have been caught using a mobile phone behind the wheel up until the end of June.

A Garda spokesman said: “Currently, there is an 11 per cent increase in mobile phone detections to [the] end of June 2024, compared to [the] same period [in] 2023.”

The figures show that in 2023, there were 19,044 people caught using their mobile phones while driving. This was up from 18,609 in 2022.

The Garda press office also referenced the Road Safety Authority’s (RSA) Mobile Device Usage Observational Survey 2023, which was published last week. This report indicated that approximately 9 per cent of motorists were observed using a mobile device during the period in which the survey was being conducted.

James Lawless, Minister of State with responsibility for road safety, told the Irish Mirror he was concerned about the rising number of people driving while using a mobile phone.

“I am asking drivers to get off their phones when at the wheel of a car,” he said.

“Put them away. We have seen a devastating increase in road trauma this year and now the research and statistics show that distraction, through the use of mobiles and apps while driving, is now a major issue.

“Distracted driving due to handheld mobile device usage is one of the dangerous behaviours that leads to road traffic collisions. This is highlighted by data from the World Health Organisation which indicates that drivers using a mobile phone are at least four times more likely to be involved in a collision.

“The latest figures show that the numbers of motorists on mobiles at the wheel are rising and this is of serious concern to me.”

The figures have been revealed amid growing concern about the number of people dying on Irish roads. So far this year, 117 people have been killed on Irish roads. This is up from 103 in the same period last year. There have been 108 collisions on the road so far this year, up from 98 in the same period last year.

As reported by the Irish Mirror earlier this week, “compulsory re-education” and “driver awareness” courses for “repeat offenders” are being considered as part of the Government’s ongoing crackdown on dangerous driving.
