A 15-year-old girl who was hanging out with friends on a rooftop met a tragic fate when she accidentally got too close to a power line and was electrocuted.

Debora Xi and her three friends were having a photoshoot on the terrace of a home in Alta Verapaz, north central Guatemala last Thursday. Chilling footage shared on social media saw Debora taking a few steps on the terrace of the two-story building while a friend took photos of her.

But just moments later, the teenager had hit a cable and was jolted as her lifeless body was captured hanging on the edge of the building. Locals on the ground below were heard screaming in horror as the force of the electrical current decapitated the teenager.

Another frantic clip saw members of the public screaming and rushing over to the area in an effort to find the 15-year-old. Bystanders quickly formed a crowd around the young girl's remains before paramedics arrived and removed them.

Local news outlets say Debora was headed to gymnastics practice but had stopped at the home with her friends, where the group spent some time practicing dances and taking photos before she accidentally got too close to a power line.

Debora's heartbroken mum Andrea Xi, posted a tribute to the teenager along with several photos, including one of her dressed in traditional clothing, and another of her wearing a pink gown at her birthday party in March. She wrote in a caption: "I love you forever. My princess", while another read: "My first and great love."

Overhead power cables are especially dangerous if a person or object gets too close, as a 'flashover' could occur, which sees electricity jump over a distance to reach the object. Flashovers can kill or cause severe shocks and burns to anyone standing nearby.

Even those who don't touch a live overhead cable line can be in danger from a flashover if they get too close. Electricity can jump across small gaps, and voltages as low as 230 volts can prove fatal.
