Lee Carsley is likely to take interim charge of England when they face Ireland in Dublin next month, according to a report on Tuesday.

The former Boys in Green midfielder was once the FAI’s top choice to replace Stephen Kenny, but after an initial meeting with the Association’s head-hunters and follow-up calls, he opted to remain in his role with the England Under-21s.

Now he is likely to be in the away dugout at the Aviva Stadium next month when England visit for the opening Nations League clash.

Carsley is also considered to be a leading candidate to take the job on a permanent basis.

A European Championships winner at Under-21 level, he is in contention as the FA continues its recruitment process for Gareth Southgate’s long-term successor.

Now it appears that he will have an audition for the role as caretaker boss for the games next month against Ireland (September 7) and Finland (September 10).

According to the Telegraph, a temporary appointment is imminent, with a squad due to be named for those games in the next few weeks.

Carsley was capped 40 times for Ireland and was touted by several former players as the man to take over from Kenny.

However, he broke his silence on the issue in March when he said: “We had an initial conversation (with the FAI) in November. I went to speak to them. Really informal, enjoyable, for around an hour. It went no further.

“It was good to see what their thoughts were and to explore whether I was ready to take that next step. It just went no further. I didn’t push it.

“I’ve always said that I’m really privileged to do this job I’m in. I appreciate that I’m in a really good position with a lot of responsibility.”

It is believed that managing the senior Ireland team remains a long-term goal for Carsley.

His first senior role, however, is now likely to be in opposition to the Boys in Green.

And while Eddie Howe, Graham Potter, Mauricio Pochettino and Thomas Tuchel are among the names linked with the long-term role, success in Dublin and against Finland would boost his prospects of a permanent promotion.
