Spain weather: Tourists warned

Spain is bracing for a drastic change in weather as weather maps and charts turn black with an extreme heatwave set to hit. The latest charts show temperatures soaring to 44C across Iberia, with more extreme heat of up to 40C expected along the Costa del Sol from July 28 to 30.

Spain's state weather agency, Aemet, has issued a warning that the first heatwave of the summer is imminent. "A large anticyclone at medium and high levels, currently located in the interior of Algeria, will intensify and extend over the next few days towards the west inducing a southerly flow, which will introduce a very warm, dry and stable air mass over the Spanish mainland and the Balearic Islands," the national agency cautioned.

The most affected areas will be the southern half and the north-eastern quadrant of the Spanish mainland, where it is expected that from Thursday 18 July "temperatures will exceed 38C reaching 40-42C in areas of the Guadiana, Tagus and Ebro valleys; and even 42-44C in the Guadalquivir valley", Aemet revealed.

The agency further explained that temperatures will remain quite high, "mainly in the eastern third of the country where the west wind will cause a further increase, with highs that may again reach 42-44C in the valleys of the Ebro, Jucar and Segura", says Aemet.

It added: "From Monday 22nd onwards, the uncertainty of the meteorological situation increases, making it difficult to determine the end of this heatwave episode. With the current information, the most likely scenario would indicate a new rise in temperatures, which could last until mid-week."

The World Meteorological Organization and EU's Copernicus previously warned that Europe is the fastest-warming continent, suffering serious health impacts as a result of temperatures climbing at about twice the rate of the global average.

Experts have raised the alarm that human-induced climate change is prompting extreme weather fluctuations, with storms and heatwaves becoming more unpredictable by the day. Sharing essential tips, the British Red Cross has advised tourists to keep indoors during peak heat periods for safety, reports Birmingham Live.

People have also been encouraged to wear clothes that are light and airy while ensuring they drink plenty of fluids to keep well-hydrated.
