Jay Slater was caught in a highly "treacherous" area, making it "virtually impossible" for him to reach safety, a man who participated in the search for him has said.

Speaking to Kate Garraway and Richard Madeley on Good Morning Britain on Tuesday, Chris Pennington shared an insight into the search for the missing teen, after a body was found in the Masca area, and summed up the teen's plight with the chilling words: "Game over".

Lancashire-born Jay vanished on June 17 after attending the New Rave Generation Festival in Tenerife and was last seen walking alone in the Rural de Teno national park.

After a month-long search, a body was found in the Masca area, in a remote and inaccessible area, prompting authorities to use a helicopter from the regional government's emergency rescue service.

During his chat with Richard and Kate, Chris explained why the area the supposed remains of Jay Slater were found in was so dangerous as he said: "Once you're in that area, it's so easy to get trapped", prompting Kate to repeat: "It's treacherous" and Chris to confirm: "It really is, game over."

To make matters worse for Jay, who had reached out to his closest friends before his disappearance, the area in which he was trapped may have led him to make a mistake as he tried to find a way out and back to his accommodation. Chris underlined how "easy" it was to suffer from dehydration and heat exhaustion in the area.

"When you stand on that top road, because of the elevation, you can see the coast and it's deceiving. It actually looks closer than what it really is," Chris added.

He then explained: "The coast is actually some 10 kilometres, and the challenges he would have had to go through to get there would have been unbearable." He bleakly concluded: "It would have been virtually impossible for Jay to make his way back."

As mentioned, this comes after a body thought to belong to Slater was found, news that his family and mother Debbie Duncan had been dreading since he disappeared.

Early in the search for the missing teen, Jay Slater's family were joined in Tenerife by former police detective Mark Williams-Thomas, who has handled high-profile missing persons cases, as attempts by local authorities to find him proved fruitless.

But after the grim discovery, Debbie has shared her grief and anger. "Debbie is completely devastated. It’s the news they’ve all been dreading. She has a lot of questions which she hopes will be answered in the coming days," a source close to the family, from Oswaldtwistle, Lancashire, said.

"It hasn’t completely sunk in yet. The hardest thing for her is to hear he was found so close to the original search site. It’s hard to take. It means it’s entirely possible they have walked past his body whilst searching for him." A formal identification has yet to be made.
