Nominations for top positions in the Labour Party will started being accepted on Friday, a process that remains open till Sunday, the Electoral Commission of the Labour Party said in a statement on Wednesday morning.

The positions that will be contested are that for the deputy leader for parliamentary affairs and deputy leader for party affairs, the president and vice-president, the International and Organising Secretaries, and positions for twelve Ordinary Members of the National Executive.

The position of Deputy Leader of Parliamentary Affairs is currently held by former Deputy Prime Minister Chris Fearne, who has declared that he will not be running for re-election in the September elections after he was criminally charged following the conclusion of a magisterial inquiry into the hospitals deal.

PL President Ramona Attard and Deputy Leader of Party Affairs Daniel Micallef have also declared that they will not be running for re-election, so with that in mind, these elections will see a number of notable positions being taken up by non-incumbents.

The PL Electoral Commission said that nomination forms can be collected from the Secretariat Office this Wednesday or Thursday from 9am to 7pm or this Friday from 9am to 5pm.

It added that it is also accepting applications this Friday from 5.30pm to 7.30pm, as well as this Saturday and Sunday from 9am to 11am. No applications will be accepted before Friday or after Sunday, it said.

The Commission said that any paid-up regular member is eligible to submit an application for any available role, except for that of Deputy Leader for Parliamentary Affairs, as only Members of Parliament are eligible for the position. It added that in order for an application to be considered valid, the application must be proposed and seconded by regular paying members and delegates of the 2024 general conference.
