The Minister of Health and Active Aging, Jo Etienne Abela, inaugurated a new ward at Mater Dei Hospital which will accommodate up to 40 patients, a government statement read.
The work on Ward M10 was completed with an investment of €1.4 million, and around €140,000 for medical equipment, it said.
It was explained that the construction of this new ward required extensive work since the area previously was not clinical. Among the renovations carried out were the installation of new walls, a treatment room, and new toilets and showers for patients. Changes were also made to the electrical and mechanical systems such as ventilation, air conditioning, water, and lighting. "This was done to support the new function of the area as a ward providing patient care. Additional systems were also installed including nurse call systems, pneumatic tube systems, and medical gases," the government statement read.
Minister Abela said that through investments made by the Ministry in infrastructure, engineering, and medical equipment, this ward is now admitting patients and providing medical services. He mentioned that the part at the back of this ward is intentioned to become a Medical High Dependency Unit where a number of professionals who will be looking after patients with serious illness are already being given training.
"Through this investment that began at the end of last year, today we see a place that was not a clinic transformed into a fully equipped ward capable of providing patient care. This aligns with the government's vision to continue improving healthcare in our country," Minister Jo Etienne Abela said.
