300 public officials and 400 police officials have this year undergone training to combat racism, Parliamentary Secretary for Equality Rebecca Buttigieg said.

Buttigieg addressed a conference marking the conclusion of the END-Racism-MT programme with was co-financed by the EU and coordinated by the Directorate for Human Rights within the parliamentary secretariat.

Buttigieg called for the need for a greater collective commitment against racism and said that this commitment will be reflected in the second National Strategy Against Racism, which will shortly be announced and will keep on building on the work that has been done in these last few years. She said the END-Racism-MT programme laid the foundation for other initiatives to fight against racism and raise a culture that is in favour of multiculturalism.

Buttigieg said that this is essential for social harmony to reign and added that it is a benefit to society and the country. Furthermore, she said that social harmony is only achieved if equality is accepted, leaves no room for discrimination and everyone's diversity is appreciated.

Buttigieg aired her disappointment with racist and derogatory comments as well as comments that promote hate speech which are posted on social media or used regarding foreign workers. She said that education remains key to changing mentalities built on prejudices and for that reason the Directorate for Human Rights is continually organizing training sessions on the subject. Indeed, she said that this year 300 public officials and over 400 members of the Police Corps received training.
