Data protection precondition for all rights says Stanzione
President of Italy's authority opens Privacy G7
Pasquale Stanzione, the president of
the Italian data-protection authority, stressed that "the
protection of data is increasingly also a precondition of every
other right or freedom" as he opened the Privacy G7 meeting in
Rome on Thursday.
"This is because, in an increasingly 'datafied' reality, in
which we are what the 'Internet says we are', data protection is
the foundation of self-determination, of the free development of
one's personality," Stanzione continued.
"But it is also a prerequisite of equality, because it is
incompatible with any form of discrimination and a real
guarantee of equal opportunities for everyone".
The theme of the encounter "Privacy in the data era" is being
addressed by the Italian data-protection authority and the
watchdogs of Canada, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, Japan
and the United States, together with the European Data
Protection Board (EDPB) and the European Data Protection
Supervisors (EDPS).
"In the era of AI and the dominance of algorithms, which, on the
one hand, offer extraordinary possibilities for development and
progress, primarily social, and, on the other, require adequate
regulation, to prevent the rule of law from being replaced by
algocracy, the protection of data is even more among the
fundamental rights which require an international vocation,"
Stanzione stressed.
"The logic of 'little nations' certainly does not apply to a
right that is exercised, more than others in an non-territorial
reality such as the Internet and which, as such, requires rules
and guarantees that are as standard as possible in the various
countries.
"For this reason it is necessary to promote comparisons between
systems and cultivate the aspiration, which is very topical, for
the universal recognition of data protection as a fundamental
human right.
"This is why we are here today - to reflect and compare the
experiences of each country on the challenges that the right to
data protection encounters in the complexity of the present and
in future scenarios," concluded Stanzione.
