Garda under GSOC investigation over crash that killed partner found dead

A Garda who was under investigation from GSOC in relation to a crash which killed his partner has been found dead in tragic circumstances.
The off-duty officer was the driver of the car which collided with a bus in Ballylanders, Co Limerick at around 3pm on October 26.
The man’s partner, who was in the passenger seat, was seriously injured in the accident and was airlifted to hospital in Cork from the scene.

She passed away at Cork University Hospital some weeks later in mid-November.
The driver and the 20 children aboard the bus were not injured.
Following a referral by gardai in line with protocol, GSOC took over investigation of the accident.
In a statement at the time, GSOC said: "The referral was made by a garda superintendent under section 102(1) of the Garda Síochána Act, 2005.
"The matter is now under examination by GSOC further to section 91 of the Garda Síochána Act, 2005. As such, no further comment will be made at this time."
The garda involved was recently arrested and questioned by GSOC officers as part of their probe.
However, the Irish Mirror has learned that he has since been found dead and the matter is being treated as a personal tragedy.
The officer was not from the Limerick Division, but it is understood he had recently applied to join the force’s Armed Support Unit.
A Garda spokesperson said: "Gardaí in West Cork were made aware of the discovery of the body of a deceased male. A file will now be prepared for the Coroner."
