A man has been arrested after an aggravated burglary that saw a woman in her 60s threatened with a hammer.

At approximately 2am on Monday morning, at a residence in Ballyfermot Parade, Ballyfermot, Dublin 10, a woman aged in her 60s was assaulted during an aggravated burglary when one man entered her home and threatened her with a hammer.

A struggle ensued and the woman managed to free herself onto the street and seek Garda assistance.

Gardaí immediately responded to the incident and a man aged in his 30s was arrested at the scene. A sum of money, house keys and car keys were recovered.

The man is currently detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984 at a Garda station in West Dublin. A Garda spokesperson said that investigations are ongoing.

The arrest was made as part of Operation Thor, launched in November 2015, which is designed to tackle the anticipated increase in the number of burglaries and associated criminal activity that usually occur in winter months by undertaking targeted enforcement and preventative activity.

This initiative has successfully reduced the rate of winter burglaries, leading to a significant decline in property related crime since its introduction in 2015. The winter phase of Operation Thor commenced on October 1 and will run until the end of March 2025.
