Ireland weather: Six essential

Irish families are being urged to stock up on six key food items ahead of an incoming snowstorm that's expected to grip the country.

Met Eireann has slapped down two Status Yellow Weather warnings and a cold weather advisory, expecting icy conditions to persist throughout much of the week.

With the possibility that rural areas may become tricky to reach amid the tempestuous weather, specialists have suggested that folk ensure their pantry is prepped with essential supplies should they get snowed in.

The city of Galway endured a substantial power outage on Monday, leaving over 3,000 homes in the dark for around an hour, and hundreds were powerless from 9.30am until after midday—the disruption not being attributed to the blizzard-like conditions.

A preparedness guru remarked: "People cope better when they have prepared in advance for the risk of power cuts or being cut off from services and amenities due to the snow. It's easy to do; consider gathering torches and batteries, a mobile phone power pack and other essential items."

Alongside the recommended torches and battery packs, it is also advised that residents ensure their homesteads are bursting with necessary sustenance ready for the chill blast. Direct Energy urges families to amass non-perishable nibbles and provisions in case a jaunt to the local shop becomes unnavigable, or they're hit by an energy blackout—meaning no-one needs to go hungry while the storm rages on.

Per the advice of the energy outfit, households should make sure their kitchens are kitted out with six particular food and drink essentials in preparation for a wild winter blanket, reports Galway Beo.

The list of essential items to stock up on includes bottled water (in case of disruption to supplies), bread, milk, tinned goods (particularly warming foods like soups and stews), snack foods such as crisps, crackers and cookies in sealed packages, cereal, granola, dried pasta and jars of sauce.

The Road Safety Authority has also issued advice for drivers, reminding them to select a low gear as early as possible when travelling downhill, especially through a series of bends, and to reduce speed gently using the brake pedal.
