Dublin GAA Chairperson, Michael Seavers has hailed Brian Fenton as “an integral figure in the incredible success enjoyed by Dublin over the past decade.”

Fenton’s retirement was confirmed in a Dublin GAA statement this morning, with others expected to follow in the coming weeks.

The 31 year old won seven All-Ireland titles and six All Stars, as well as landing the Footballer of the Year award twice in a superb 10 year career.

“He is a hugely talented footballer and fan favourite who will forever be considered one of the greatest players to grace the field in a blue jersey,” said Seavers.

“We thank Brian for his unwavering commitment to Dublin football. We wish him and his family all the best going forward and look forward to welcoming him back to Parnell Park as he continues to play with his club Raheny.”

It is anticipated that other retirements will follow with Dessie Farrell facing a major rebuilding job next year.

James McCarthy retired last week, while the plans of nine-time All-Ireland winners Stephen Cluxton and Michael Fitzsimons - currently lining out for Cuala in the Leinster Championship - have yet to be revealed.

Jack McCaffrey and Paul Mannion were tempted back into the fold two years ago, but may now consider their futures in the wake of two influential figures like McCarthy and Fenton retiring.

At least one more established long serving star is believed to be weighing up his future in a move that would shock Dublin fans, while others are yet to commit.

With the December 7 return to collective training date fast approaching, an announcement could be imminent.

Cluxton made his Dublin debut back in 2000, while Fitzsimons made his debut in 2010. They are the only remaining players from the 2011 All-Ireland win over Kerry. McCaffrey and Mannion played in the 2013 All-Ireland decider win over Kerry and Ciaran Kilkenny would have joined them only for injury.

All five featured in the 2015 final victory over Kerry, while John Small came in off the bench.
