Irish language film Kneecap leads this year’s British Independent Film Award nominations with 14 nods, including Best Director and Best Screenplay.

Directed by Rich Peppiatt, the film’s impressive nominations haul also includes nods for Best Debut Screenwriter, Best British Independent Film, and eight craft categories, including Best Casting and Best Cinematography.

The Kneecap trio Liam Óg Ó Hannaidh, Naoise Ó Cairealláin, JJ Ó Dochartaigh are nominated for Best Joint Lead Performance.

The film is also nominated for Best British Independent Film plus eight craft categories: Best Casting, Best Cinematography, Best Costume Design, Best Editing, Best Music Supervision, Best Original Music, Best Production Design and Best Sound.

The comedy has already taken honours at the Sundance Film Festival in the US and the Galway Film Fleadh.

And it has also been chosen as the Irish entry for the International Feature Film category at next year's Academy Awards, following in the footsteps of An Cailín Ciúin (The Quiet Girl).

Saoirse Ronan’s The Outrun also received nine nominations, with the Carlow actress bagging herself a nomination for best lead performance.

Love Lies Bleeding, the bodybuilding noir from Saint Maud director Rose Glass, starring Kristen Stewart and Katy O’Brian received 12 nominations, with Glass nominated for best director and screenwriter (along with co-writer Weronika Tofilska), while Stewart and O’Brian are up for best joint lead performance.
