An audacious motorist has been nabbed driving dangerously under the influence of drugs while speeding over 80km/h above the limit.

On Friday, Longford Gardaí responded to reports of a car being driven dangerously on N5 when they spotted one travelling a dangerous 80km/h over the speed limit.

“Longford Gardaí were responding to reports of a car being driven dangerously on N5 when they spotted this one travelling over 80km/h above the speed limit,” a Garda spokesperson wrote on X.

“The driver tested positive for cocaine and cannabis on the roadside and was also driving uninsured.”

This driver faces a slew of charges which could land them with a whopper fine, a disqualification and even a prison sentence.

The maximum penalty for drunk or drug driving is a €5000 fine and/or imprisonment for up to six months.

If you are found to be impaired from drugs while driving, the penalty or disqualification periods are a minimum of four years for a first offence and six years for a second or subsequent offence.

Alongside this, the driver broke the speed limit, meaning they are subject to receiving three penalty points and a fixed charge fine of €160. If you do not pay the fine within 28 days, it increases to €240.

Lastly, you must have motor insurance to drive a car in your own name or as a named driver on someone else's policy, if you don’t gardaí have the power to impound your vehicle, serve you with a massive fine and penalty points, and you may even be hit with a jail sentence.

Offences for driving without insurance are prosecuted in court. Failure to display an insurance disk carries an initial fixed charge of €60 which rises to €90 after 28 days.

If you drive while uninsured, you could be fined up to €5,000 and get five penalty points. You could also go to prison for up to six months. The judge may also decide to disqualify you from driving instead of giving you penalty points.
