Canning was born on 11 October 1988 and is 36 years old and is from Portumna.
Family life
Canning grew up in a hurling-mad household with six other siblings, five of whom went on to win All-Ireland titles for either club or county.
Joe's older brother Ollie captained Galway and won four All-Stars.
Canning's mother Josephine passed away in January 2022
Professional life
Canning has become a successful entrepreneur and runs a Camille Thai restaurant in Galway and the popular bar Maisies in Athlone.
He has also been a brand ambassador for Audi and is known for his work with UNICEF.
Wife and child
Canning got married to long-term Meg in November 2022.
The pair tied the knot at Monaleen Church in Limerick. They have a daughter, Josie, and live in Limerick.
Life after Intercounty career
Canning has been working as part of the RTE's Sunday Game panel since his retirement. He has also served as a selector for the Galway Under-20 hurling team.
