A controversial 18-day ban for jockey Callum Shepherd has been quashed at the conclusion of a disciplinary hearing.

The rider was handed the punishment by on-course stewards at Kempton, for failing to ride out to the finish on joint winner Thorntonledale Max.

David Simcock's horse dead-heated with Flavour Maker after seven furlongs on August 21 and panel members deciding the case assessed dozens of replays from different angles.

Shepherd's explanation that he lost rhythm a few strides before the line, which caused him to briefly stand in his irons, was accepted.

“I look a mess, it’s embarrassing to watch but what is crucial is we didn’t lose any momentum whatsoever," he said.

"My riding style just fell apart in the final strides."
