There will be a glut of finals involving Irish Paralympians taking place later this afternoon and tonight.

On what was a memorable morning for Team Ireland on the pool and on the track, an emotional Ellen Keane brought the final curtain down on her illustrious five-Games career.

Tokyo gold medallist Keane, who finished fourth in her strongest event - the SB8 100m breaststroke, on Saturday - finished 12th overall in the S9 100m backstroke with a final Games swim clocking in at 1:17.63 at the stunning La Défense venue in Paris.

"I'm really proud of that swim it was really fun, it hurt a lot but today has been really special," said the 29-year-old from Clontarf later.

"To have that as a care-free event is the most amazing thing. Last night I said to Nicole (Turner, her team-mate) before I got to bed, ‘why can't I just keep swimming and do events that don't matter like you're a kid?

"Everything this morning went really slow and that’s good because it just felt I was in the moment and really taking everything in," she added.

"Even coming in and doing my warm-up, putting on my racing suit, there have been moments where I just stopped and reflected on it. I just keep crying."

The two-time world champ has passed the baton on now to Limerick's Róisín Ní Riaín, who is hoping to add to the backstroke silver medal she has already won in these Games in tonight's 200m individual medley final tonight (7.04pm Irish time).

The 19-year-old is the third fastest qualifier, having finished as runner-up in her heat in 2:30.75 in her heat behind Carlotta Gilli of Italy. America's Olivia Chambers was the fastest qualifier but Ní Riaín is looking to improve on her morning performance.

"The aim of this morning was just to get out and put down a good swim, make it back to tonight," she explained. "I'm happy I did that.

"I’ll go back and have a look now and see where I can improve and pick up a couple of seconds for later. I definitely glided two of my turns, so that is something to work on tonight."

Barry McClements will be the first Irish hopeful in a pool final today when he competes in the S9 100m breaststroke final at 4.37pm.

The 22-year-old qualified as the eighth fastest finalist after finishing fourth in his heat in a time of 1:05.36.

Nicole Turner and Dearbhaile Brady are both into the S9 50m butterfly final, too. Tullamore's Turner, a silver medallist in Tokyo, is looking to push for a medal after finishing sixth in the freestyle final.

She finished third in her heat in a time of 38.10, just ahead of Limavady's Brady (38.73) - they are the fifth and sixth fastest qualifiers respectively for the final at 5.05pm.

"This morning was about staying loose, getting rid of the nerves, having fun and coming back later and do my thing," Turner said. "All my friends came over last night. Those were the moments you missed from Tokyo."

Orla Comerford, who was one of Ireland's two flagbearers in the opening ceremony, charged into the T13 100m final at the Stade de France by winning her heat in wet conditions this morning.

The Dubliner equalled her PB in a time of 12.02, beating Bianca Borgella of Canada and America's Kym Crosby to the finish line. Comerford recorded the third fastest time of the qualifiers and she will be on the blocks at the Saint Denis venue at 7.13pm.

"I was feeling really confident coming into it," said the Raheny Shamrocks sprinter, who will feel she can make the podium tonight in what his her third Games.
