Manchester United stars have rallied around under-fire Casemiro in the aftermath of his Liverpool nightmare.

The Brazilian midfielder endured an awful afternoon in the Red Devils’ 3-0 defeat at Old Trafford. He was directly at fault for each of the opening two goals - Luis Diaz finding the net for the visitors on both occasions.

Casemiro was then ridiculed by the away fans for a poor pass that dribbled out of play. The ex- Real Madrid star’s afternoon then got even worse as he was hauled off in favour of academy graduate Toby Collyer.

Despite Casemiro’s nightmare, his teammates have jumped to his defence in the 24 hours after his nightmare against Liverpool. Bruno Fernandes was reportedly those to speak out in his defence in the dressing room.

According to The Sun, the Portuguese playmaker claimed that Casemiro was not at fault and that it was the squad’s responsibility to turn things around - an assessment that his Red Devils teammates agreed with. United stars have also backed the veteran to bounce back from his Anfield horrors.

Sunday’s outing has also not impacted the midfielder’s future with the club. Ten Hag and the club’s new management were firm in their view that they would be best served keeping him amid interest from Saudi Arabia.

While Casemiro received a rallying call behind the scenes, the same could be said publicly. Fernandes also backed his teammate in his post-match assessment.

He said: "The goals are always self-inflicted. You need to commit a mistake to give them the goal. We don't need to be pointing fingers at everyone. that won't help us now.

“When you concede a goal you can't just point at one mistake. What's the point in saying Casemiro lost the ball or Kobbie [Mainoo] lost the ball? They lost the ball because they wanted to be brave. It's part of football. Don't make it individual.

"Casemiro is more experienced than me. I don't need to tell him anything, he knows what football is about. He's played for the two best clubs in the world."

Erik ten Hag also gave his verdict post-game. He said: "You know the game. He knows the game. He will go on, we will go on. He's a great player. We will continue this season to improve the team and the players.

“He improved, and showed so often, that he is a great character. We all have seen great moments from him, being decisive in the midfield. He will show it again, I am sure he will bounce back."

Casemiro will have a break over the next fortnight due to the first international fixtures of the season. He has not been called up for Brazil for their games against Ecuador and Paraguay.

The midfielder will now turn his attention to United’s next outing in two weeks’ time. The Red Devils take on struggling Southampton at St Mary’s on Saturday 14 September.
