Rising Munster star ruled out

Munster back row Brian Gleeson has been ruled out for six to eight weeks after underdoing shoulder surgery last month.

The 20-year-old, who captained the Ireland under-20s in the Junior World Cup semi-final loss to England in July, made 11 appearances off the bench for the province last season - including three in the Champions Cup.

The Reds have also confirmed that they will be without lock Cian Hurley for a number of months after a knee operation. The Clonakilty man only returned to action last March after almost a year out.

Scrum-half Ethan Coughlan will undergo a scan today after suffering a thigh injury in last Saturday's first pre-season game, a 24-21 loss to Bath at The Rec.

Academy back-row forward Ruadhán Quinn was removed with a thigh contusion and will be monitored this week, while veteran prop Dave Kilcoyne is rehabbing a short-term ankle injury.

However in better news for the province, Jean Kleyn (knee/eye), Tom Ahern (ankle) and Paddy Patterson (knee) are nearing a return to training with Munster confirming that the trio are in the final stages of their rehab programme.

Roman Salanoa (knee), Edwin Edogbo (Achilles) and Rory Scannell (ankle) remain ruled out for the time being as they continue their rehab.

Scott Buckley returned from his short-term loan with Australian side Randwick last week and featured against Bath.

The hooker could also feature in Munster's home pre-season meeting with Gloucester at Virgin Media Park in Cork on Friday night (7pm).
