The Taoiseach has vowed to “stand with Ukraine” in their battle against the Russian invasion – and said he is looking forward to the country joining the EU.

To mark Ukrainian Independence Day Simon Harris said Ukraine’s fight for its independence is standing up for freedom and democracy right across the world. He said Ukraine is part of the European family and welcomes the day when it will be a member of the EU.

In a video posted on X, he said: “On behalf of the people of Ireland I extend my warmest congratulations to the Government and people of Ukraine on your Independence Day.

“Thirty-three years ago Ukraine declared its independence, today you inspire the world with your unwavering commitment to defending it.

“In determining Ukraine’s right to determine its own future you are standing up for freedom and democracy right across the world.

“The people of Ireland are proud to stand with you and will do so until you prevail. You are part of our European family and we look forward to the day when Ukraine takes its place as a member of the European Union.

“I would especially like to extend my very best wishes to the thousands of Ukrainians who have made Ireland your refuge and your home. You are welcome and we greatly value the contribution you make. I wish the people of Ukraine continued strength, bravery and success. Slava Ukraine.”

Separately the Taoiseach indicated that there will be more cost-of-living payments before Christmas. He confirmed there would be a number of once-off payments for the third year running and these will be paid before Christmas.

He also said the €2billion windfall from the sale of the State’s shareholding in Allied Irish Bank could be used for a number of infrastructure projects, including housing. And he said migrant tent encampments in Dublin will not be tolerated and hit out at “official Ireland” for turning a blind eye to them.
