Liverpool are yet to make a signing this summer but may have already received a boost for their transfer plans of the future.

The Reds failed in their bid to land Martin Zubimendi to strengthen their midfield and currently seem unlikely to sign an alternative before the month is out. Sporting director Richard Hughes remains hard at work to try and facilitate a new player for Arne Slot, but the Dutch coach claims he remains content with his squad.

"I said many times already our squad is really strong so it is not easy to find players to strengthen," said the Dutchman. "Zubimendi was one but he chose not to come here so we go forward with the one we have. We're in a good place and Richard is trying to improve the squad in the background.

"Zubimendi didn't want to come and Richard tried everything. We kept the same team but lost Thiago, Joel [Matip] and Adrian and you always talk about transfers but we have a positive team already."

In addition to Zubimendi, a surprise prospect of landing Anthony Gordon emerged earlier in the summer as Newcastle looked to maintain their profit and sustainability compliance. The Reds were said to be unhappy with the terms offered but it may not be the last time the opportunity arises.

Now, being aware of the possibility of such a transfer may leave Liverpool more prepared to act upon it. Gordon is unlikely to leave the North East this month, but Eddie Howe has already admitted sales will be required in the future.

"There’s not necessarily financial pressures to lose anybody before the end of this window," Newcastle's boss explained. "But player trading is key, and we have to trade players out as well as players in. That’s not necessarily in the next two weeks. But certainly, within the next window, that’s what we’ll have to do."

The Magpies have so far being able to retain their major stars this summer. In addition to Gordon, Alexander Isak and Bruno Guimaraes were widely linked to a possible exit.

The latter has since been named as Newcastle United's captain after wearing the band in their opening match against Southampton. Jamaal Lascelles has become club captain as a result, while Kieran Trippier is said to have moved to vice-captain.
