Fulham could help Man Utd land

Fulham have hijacked Manchester United's move for Sander Berge, but the Cottagers could still help their Premier League rivals to land Manuel Ugarte.

United had appeared to move on from the Uruguyan midfielder after talks with PSG stalled. One of their targets was thought to be Berge, with Burnley willing to sell the Norwegian following their relegation.

But Fulham have stolen a march on the Red Devils and are closing in on a £25million deal for the 26-year-old. The Cottagers have money to spend after selling Joao Palhinha to Bayern Munich for £47.4m.

With money still remaining in their warchest, there have been suggestions that they could reignite their interest in Scott McTominay. The Scot is a prime candidate to leave Old Trafford this summer having been relegated to the role of squad player last season.

According to The Athletic, United's focus for the final two weeks of the window is on outgoings and talks have stepped up over McTominay's exit. While Napoli are one of the interested suitors, Fulham have also been eyeing a move.

United are seeking a fee in the region of £25m for the 27-year-old and have already rejected several offers from the Cottagers below that fee. Despite signing Berge, Fulham could still return for McTominay.

There is an expectation that a decision on a move will be left until late in the window, which closes at 11pm on 30 August. Fulham boss Marco Silva has warned his side still have a lot of work to do to rebuild their squad following several key exits.

A move for Manuel Ugarte could be opened up by Fulham's own transfer strategy

“We lost four starters [in the transfer window. We are probably the only team in the Premier League that lost four starters. We have to rebuild again. There is a lot of work for us to do over the next two weeks to rebuild," he told Match of the Day after the defeat to United last Friday.

“But we are very pleased with how the players have worked. We are working hard to get what we need. When the game becomes open we should have kept the balance and kept compact. But in those moments we lost emotional control and that allowed them to score.

“The game was open and broken – we tried to rush our decisions. Many times we started to lose the ball too quickly. We let the game go too emotional and we didn’t want that. Frustration with the result for us. Big frustration for our players and fans, for sure."

If some of that work involved signing McTominay, it may allow United to find a breakthrough for Ugarte. The Red Devils have been in negotiations with PSG for the midfielder for some time and would have the money to match the French side's valuation if McTominay moved on.

Ugarte has been Erik ten Hag's top target for central midfield all summer, with PSG willing to allow him to leave after just one season at the Parc des Princes. PSG are seeking a fee of £51m for the 23-year-old.
