Irish Olympic hero returning to action for first time in almost five years

Olympic hero John Joe Nevin will fight for the first time in almost five years in Mexico this weekend.
'The Mullingar Shuffler' has not been seen in the ring since November 2019 when he won a ten-round bout via unanimous decision at York Hall, beating Nicaraguan fighter Freddy Fonseca for the WBA International super featherweight title.
Nevin returns to action at an event in Jiutepec, which is located some 76 kilometres south of Mexico City.

Now 35, Nevin is undefeated in 14 professional fights, having made his pro debut over ten years ago in Boston.
A silver medallist at the 2012 Olympic Games in London, the Westmeath native is a two-time Olympian, having also competed at the 2008 Beijing tournament.
Based in Philadelphia for a number of years, the majority of Nevin's pro bouts took place in America.
He had been due to fight former WBO Youth Champion Shaun Cooper in April 2021, but the event fell to Covid in what proved to be a big blow for the Mullingar man.
He takes on 40-year-old Mexican Jose Hernandez Flores (9-14-1) in a six-round super lightweight contest in the early hours of Sunday morning Irish time.
