Jamie Carragher believes there is no chance Manchester United will finish in the top three this season, having agreed to a £5,000 bet for charity with Gary Neville.

Manchester City and Arsenal have been the two standout teams in recent seasons and they are widely expected to vie for the Premier League title once again this year. Carragher and Neville, meanwhile, believe both their former clubs will finish third and have decided to put their money where their mouths are.

During United's 1-0 win over Fulham, Neville revealed: "Me and Carra had a £5,000 bet for charity. A £5,000 bet for charity that Liverpool would finish above United or United would finish above Liverpool. Whoever loses it goes."

And Carragher has insisted there is no way United will make the top three, stating: "Man Utd will not finish third, I can assure you of that. They will be in a fight with Tottenham, Villa and Chelsea. They will be in the fight to get into the Champions League."

Carragher also believes United must "make Old Trafford a fortress again" if they are to compete this season, having suffered 19 defeats at home last season across all competitions. "Manchester United have to start really well," he told Sky Sports.

"It's obvious the hierarchy were looking for a new manager in the summer and they couldn't quite find one so they stuck with the manager they had. He's been allowed to make signings and spend money this summer, but that is the nature of being Manchester United boss.

"He'll know, and I’m sure everyone at the club will know, that the pressure will intensify if they don't make a good start, starting against Fulham on Friday. Fulham beat them at Old Trafford last season so United know they have to be stronger at home this time around.

Carragher does not think Manchester United will finish in the top three this season

"They need to try and make Old Trafford a fortress again because they lost too many games last season – 19 in all competitions. That's far too many for a club the size and the stature of Manchester United."

He is also backing City to win a fifth consecutive league title, adding: "Arsenal will be the closest challengers but Pep Guardiola, it doesn't matter what league he is in, more often than not he wins the league title.

"The only people that have managed to stop him are Jose Mourinho at Real Madrid one season and Jurgen Klopp with Liverpool a few seasons ago in the Premier League. That shows how tough it is and it has been tough on Arsenal with how close they have come in the last two season, but I know with Liverpool, Manchester City are a very difficult nut to crack."
