Dwight Yorke has laid into Wayne Rooney’s managerial record by claiming the only reason he continues to get jobs is because friends within the game are “protecting him.”

Rooney copped plenty of flak after Plymouth Argyle began their Championship campaign with a 4-0 defeat away to Sheffield Wednesday last weekend.

And despite winning 3-0 against Cheltenham in the opening round of the EFL Cup on Wednesday evening, there is already pressure on Rooney, 38, to prove he is worth the hype as a gaffer.

Plymouth host Hull this afternoon but after Rooney fell short of succeeding at Derby County, DC United and Birmingham City, his fellow former Manchester United goalscorer Yorke is convinced he only continues to get work because of his connections.

“We have all tried to defend Wayne Rooney on his managerial record in the chances he has been given but you can only defend him for so long,” Yorke said.

‌”He’s got a real opportunity to show what he can do and show how he can get his team playing but they got off to the worst start possible.

‌”So far in management he’s been given chance after chance and done very little in terms of success, that’s out there and it’s well documented and you can only defend that record for so long.

“He needs to do better at management, simple. He's got friends in football that are protecting him and now he needs to give something back. I can defend him but he’s had the platform to succeed and so far he hasn’t delivered.”

Wayne Rooney will be hoping for much more from his players when Plymouth take on Hull this afternoon.

‌Yorke, who was speaking to CSGOluck, has only one short managerial stint to his name - at Australian club Macarthur. And the 52-year-old hinted that Rooney is only one more disappointing spell away from it being clear that the job is not for him.

“You've got to show why you're worthy of being a manager and there will come a point in time when someone has to tell him the truth and the real truth about his managerial career," Yorke added.

“I give him the benefit of the doubt because I know Rooney himself, but he has to do better and that start hasn't helped him. If that continues, maybe management is not for him.

“I won't say that is the case just yet, but he's getting jobs because he’s Wayne Rooney. He needs to do better.”
