The devastated family of Jay Slater have launched a new fundraiser ahead of his funeral, which took place earlier today.

The 19-year-old was tragically found dead in Tenerife last month after an extensive month-long search on the Spanish island, where he was holidaying with friends. Jay, from Oswaldtwistle, Lancashire, had attempted to return to his accommodation after staying at a rural Airbnb with two men he had befriended on the trip.

A post-mortem examination found that his death was instantaneous, and injuries were consistent with a fall, which he suffered in the treacherous Masca village - with Spanish police suggesting he had fallen from a height in the difficult terrain he was walking through.

Loved ones gathered on Saturday in Accrington, Lancashire - near his hometown of Oswaldtwistle - to pay tribute to Jay. His family have now asked if well-wishers could put their money towards donations to LBT Global - the charity who supported search efforts - rather than sending flowers.

A short statement on the new fundraising site reads: "This fundraiser is in memory of Jay Slater, so friends and family can honour his memory with a gift to LBT Global.

"Jay's family have asked for donations in memory of Jay to LBT Global, the charity that has helped and continues to help them through the tragic loss of Jay in Tenerife. All donations will go straight to supporting families in similar situations."

A separate GoFundMe launched straight after Jay's disappearance raised more than £72,000, and was used to pay for specialist search teams before the family said the funds would be used to give Jay a "good send off".

A tribute released by his family ahead of the funeral read: "A loving son of Debbie and Warren, a cherished brother of Zak and brother-in-law of Jessica, a treasured grandson of Dawn, June and the late Dougie, a much-loved nephew of Glen and Katie, a dear cousin of Maddie and Tillie and a loyal friend to many.

"Jay will be very sadly missed by all those who knew him."

The family said: "After Jay left Rhyddings High School he went on to become an apprentice bricklayer with the PH Build group, a job he greatly enjoyed. At the young age of five Jay started playing football for Huncoat United FC until the age of 17 and also did a few seasons with the Sunday team at St Joseph's too. He also loved spending time chilling out with his friends.

"Jay's love of music and dance started at a very young age. He loved attending music festivals and events across the country and also loved to socialise and meet new people."
