Derry City have appointed a contractor to construct a new North Stand in their Ryan McBride Brandywell Stadium.

With the demolition of two blocks of the existing Southend Stand already having taken place, construction of the new stand is expected to begin in the coming weeks and will continue into early next year.

Planning permission for the partial demolition of the Southend Stand and the development of a safe standing covered terrace, male and female toilet facilities, additional turnstiles and access gates was granted last October.

The work is being funded and developed by Derry City FC, with the support and assistance of the stadium owners Derry City and Strabane District Council.

The development will add 1,800 seats, but when used as a safe standing terrace the added capacity would increase to 2,600. Currently, the capacity of the Brandywell is 3,500.

Derry City Chief Executive Sean Barrett said: “Derry City FC is delighted that we are now at a stage where construction work on the new stand is set to start.

“Ongoing engagement will continue with user groups, residents and fans over the coming weeks and months and every effort will be made to ensure disruption will be kept to a minimum.

“We look forward to keeping our supporters updated as the work continues.”
