They have been together 20 years and met on TV, so Emma and Matt Willis are ideal hosts for a matchmaking series.

Matt was in Busted when the boyband were interviewed by his now-wife Emma for MTV’s Total Request show in 2004. The cheeky couple will present the UK version of Netflix hit Love Is Blind.

And Matt, 41, admits: “Love wasn’t blind for me, I knew exactly who she was. I was like, that’s the fit girl from MTV, I’m going to go straight for that. Now I love everything about her. She spoke to us on TRL. But then we hung out in Miami, it was very showbiz. We were at an awards show and met up then.”

Stroking his hair, Emma, 48, mum to their three children, adds: “We’re not traditionally romantic. We’re a bit silly-romantic.” Matt adds: “We’re quite soppy. When I proposed, she was deadly embarrassed. We’re not those kinds of people with declarations of love.”

Matt admits on the show he is punching above his weight with Emma: “From early in my relationship, I thought I’m going to grab on for dear life.”

Love Is Blind contestants would love to be able to say the same one day. Filmed last year, it follows the US format with groups of single men and women living in same-sex accommodation. Over several weeks, they go into individual dating pods where they get to talk to each other but, crucially, not see each other. They then choose someone to marry without ever seeing them.

The engaged couples move in together, plan their wedding and find out if their emotional bond matches physically. As their wedding day arrives the couples decide if they are going through with it or bailing out at the altar. Emma says: “It’s whether you want to trust the pro-cess, how fixated you are on physical attributes compared to emotional ones. You’ll scream at the telly.”

Its contestants are older than Love Island ’s. Matt says: “You see men be vulnerable and talk about problems. It’s good for British men to see that.” Matt himself has been in rehab with drink and drug addiction. He adds: “When things get tough, that’s the real test. You see moments like that in the show.” Emma adds: “It’s real life. You’re watching people in a love story.”

Love Is Blind UK launches on Netflix on August 4.
