The heartbroken brother of this young teen who lost his life in an e-scooter tragedy has paid an emotional tribute to him.

“Fly high brother, I will never be the same again,” Philip Carthy said. His brother Joe, who was just 14, died when he was involved in an accident as he rode his e-scooter near Kilkenny City.

Jow, who was from a well-known traveller family in Kilkenny, was fatally injured in the incident just outside the town on Saturday evening.

Gardaí said the e-scooter he was riding was in collision with a car on the Tullaroan Road at Bonnettstown at around 6:30pm.

A devastated Philip said last night: “Rest in peace brother. I hope you get the best bed in heaven. You left me with a lot of memories. Brother it will never be gone. I will never be the same brother.”

Gardaí investigating the collision have now appealed for witnesses to come forward. A spokesman said: “Gardaí are appealing for witnesses following a fatal road traffic collision in Co. Kilkenny on Saturday, 27 July 2024.

“The collision involving an e-scooter and a car occurred on the Tullaroan Road at Bonnettstown shortly before 6:30pm.

“A male youth, 14 years old, travelling on the e-scooter was transferred to St. Luke's Hospital, Kilkenny where he has since passed away from his injuries.

“The local coroner has been notified and arrangements are being made for a post-mortem examination in due course. There were no other injuries reported.

“The road was closed overnight to facilitate a technical examination of the scene by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators, which took place this morning. The road has since reopened to traffic.”

“Anyone with any information is asked to contact Kilkenny Garda Station on 056 777 5000, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station.”

Dozens of tributes were posted online for young Joe. The Kilkenny Traveller Community Movement said on its Facebook page: “Heartbreaking news on the tragic passing of young Joe. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Carthy Family today. RIP Joe.”

And a pal said: “Rip Joe had your whole life ahead of you, only a child of 14 years of age. Only seen u by the post office the other day. Oh god, it’s a cruel world we live in,”

“I’ll cherish the little bit of memories we had.” And another friend said: “Rip bud may you get the best bed in heaven.

“Condolences to the Carty family. Biggest smile on his face every time he passed you, always so friendly. Heart’s broken for you and your family. May God take good care of you Joe. Forever 14.”
