Coronation Street viewers have shared their surprise after Chesney Brown's age was confirmed in a scene this week.

The character has been played by Sam Aston, 31, since his first appearance on the ITV soap opera, which airs on Virgin Media in Ireland, in 2003. Chesney was introduced as the son of Cilla Brown (played by Wendi Peters ) and the brother of Fiz Brown ( Jennie McAlpine ).

Just last year, cast member Sam - who's worked on Corrie since he was a child - celebrated 20 years on the show. It's now been teased that there's a milestone approaching in Chesney's life, as referenced on Wednesday's episode.

The recently-aired scene saw Chesney and his wife Gemma Winter ( Dolly-Rose Campbell ) spending time together in the Rovers Return. The couple were joined in the local pub by Gemma's mother Bernie Winter ( Jane Hazlegrove ).

Gemma was heard asking her husband: "So do you wanna do owt for your birthday tomorrow?" Chesney - whose family have been facing eviction from their home as part of a storyline - however replied: "Can't afford it, can we?"

Bernie went on to suggest that Chesney is celebrating a milestone birthday, telling him in the scene: "Thirty's a big one!" He again dismissed the prospect, with him telling his mother-in-law: "Yeah, I don't really feel like celebrating, to be honest." He added: "I'm too worried about the house."

The scene was met with reaction from some fans on social media this week after it aired. Several viewers expressed surprise on X, formerly known as Twitter, over discovering that long-running character Chesney is set to turn 30.

One person questioned in a tweet: "How is Chesney only 30?" Another said: "Oddly shocked that Chesney is currently in his 20s." Someone replied to them by writing: "Me too, can't comprehend that he's only 7 years older than me."

A fourth person asked: "He's only 30?" Seemingly sharing their disbelief over the news, another viewer tweeted recently: "Chesney is only 30." Whilst one person teased: "He's just a pipe and slippers away from being in his 70's."

Whilst commemorating his anniversary on the soap opera last year, Sam teased that he's been referred to as 'Old Man Chesney' behind-the-scenes at Corrie. He told the Mirror at the time: "My friends say I have an old head on young shoulders. [Dolly-Rose] calls me Old Man Chesney."

During the same interview, Sam expressed gratitude for being part of the show, saying: "I'm lucky to be here. I'’ve never taken it for granted or rested on my laurels." He went on to discuss the idea of being in the cast for years to come.

He said: "It would be surreal but cool. People have watched me grow up and I can imagine Chesney being an old man and pottering off to the Rovers. It would be an honour."

Coronation Street continues on Friday night from 8pm on Virgin Media
