Tributes are being paid to a “popular” and “friendly” Slovakian man who tragically died in a house fire in Mayo last week.

Dusan Ivan, 40s, sadly died on Thursday, July 11 following a fire at a property on Tolan Street, Ballina. Gardaí arrived at the scene early that morning with emergency services to fight the blaze, but Dusan was pronounced dead at the scene. A second man was also hospitalised.

Tributes have poured in far and wide for beloved Dusan, who is originally from Prešov in Slovakia but worked in security in Ballina, from locals who described him as “very well-liked” and a “popular man”.

“Dusan was a very popular man at The Castle Late Night Venue in Westport and while his work was to ensure our safety in the nightclub,” one person said.

“He was very well-liked by many nightclub goers and he clearly enjoyed his job and put everyone at ease with his demeanour. Dusan will be missed by staff and punters alike”.

Another penned: “So sad to hear about the circumstance of your passing. Your line of work meant you were involved in the safety of other people. Unfortunately, you couldn’t save yourself.”

“Deeply sorry for the untimely loss of Dusan whom I hadn't the pleasure of knowing but has affected so many in his adoptive town. May his soul rest in peace and his spirit soar,” one more person said.

Dusan will repose at McGowan's Funeral Home in Ballina on Wednesday evening from 7:30pm until 8:30pm.

Removal from McGowan’s funeral home will take place on Thursday morning at 11am to St. Muredach’s Cathedral, Ballina arriving for Requiem Mass at 11:30am followed by cremation in Shannon Crematorium. May he rest in peace.
