Former Ireland star in the run

Gareth Southgate called time on his eight-year spell in charge of England this morning just two days after losing 2-1 to Spain in the final of Euro 2024.

That was the former Aston Villa defender's second successive defeat in a European final after failing at the final stage against Italy at Wembley in 2021.

With quarter-final and semi-final World Cup exits also on his CV, Southgate leaves the role as the most successful England manager since 1966 hero Sir Alf Ramsey.

Here, we take a look at six candidates who could replace Southgate as England manager.

Lee Carsley

The Under-21 manager is highly admired at the FA and has already built a winning reputation with many of the young players who will need to step up in the coming years.

He has turned down the Ireland senior job and a number of Championship clubs have previously tested his interest.

A move to the senior ranks is inevitable, and let’s not forget where Southgate came from, but this feels a little too early.

Graham Potter

The bookmakers' early favourite. He has been waiting patiently for the right job to crop up since being cut loose from the Chelsea basket case and would be a natural fit to inherit the environment Southgate has helped create at St George’s Park.

He is big on fostering a positive culture and, despite the Stamford Bridge nightmare, a very smart tactician.

But one major doubt is his ability to engage openly with the media. He is not naturally charismatic and would not be as comfortable as Southgate when the pressure ramps up.

Eddie Howe

The Newcastle manager has plenty of similarities with Potter and would offer a more progressive style than Southgate. He has also batted away some uncomfortable questions on Tyneside about his employers, a skill that would serve him well in charge of England.

But would he want to leave what, for now, looks a secure role at a Premier League club expected to challenge for the Champions League places again?

Thomas Tuchel

Thomas Tuchel already knows how to get Harry Kane scoring.

A trophy collector, save for the shocker at Bayern, who can charm anyone and has loved living in London from his time at Chelsea. Harry Kane has spoken highly of him, he knows several of the players already and his teams can turn on the style when required.

It would be a scalp for the FA but Tuchel will be desperate for another big club job first.

Mauricio Pochettino

Recently departed Chelsea after doing a good job in nightmare circumstances and already looking for another job. But, much like Tuchel, will be looking at the club game rather than the international world - which still feels like semi-retirement for many coaches.

Pochettino ticks plenty of boxes - from promoting young players and a good style to being very comfortable in front of the cameras.

Jurgen Klopp

Former Liverpool and Germany midfielder Didi Hamann has already been banging the drum that the FA must do everything in their power to convince Klopp that his next step should be taking over England.

The Germany job remains Julian Nagelsmann’s and Klopp would obviously be a massive appointment if he could be tempted. But it would be a seismic shock to see it happen.
