Avocados are a must-have during the summer season and make an ideal addition to your morning meal, but slicing into a brown and spoiled avocado is always disappointing.

We all loathe squandering our hard-earned cash and food, but it appears that a significant number of us have been incorrectly storing our avocados they should never be kept in water.

Cook and founder of The Cross Legacy, Amy Lynn Cross, has revealed that whilst there's a trend on social media advocating for storing avocados in water to lengthen their freshness, such practice poses the risk of promoting bacteria growth and causing fruit contamination.

Cross stated: "These tips show people storing whole and halved avocados in water to keep them fresh longer. It has been all over social media. In reality, it could be making you sick."

Fortunately, there is a safer and more effective method to keep your precious avocados fresh and tasty for up to a full month, reports the Express.

How to properly store avocados for longer freshness

Instead of throwing away spoiled fruit, the best method to preserve avocados is to thoroughly wash them to eliminate any bacteria, let them air dry, then stash them in an air-tight container.

Amy shared her personal recipe, stating: "My 'secret elixir' for washing avocados is actually quite simple and easy on the budget. It's composed of two ingredients: cool water and 5% distilled white vinegar."

While it might sound odd, washing avocados, and other fruits for that matter, with a vinegar solution will eliminate any potential bacterial contaminants on the skin, hence extending their shelf life.

First things first, peel off any labels from the avocado skin and pop them into a bowl of cold water mixed with 60ml of white vinegar. Wind up your timer for a strict two minutes before dunking the avocados in, and be sure not to leave the fruit soaking any longer, or you might end up tasting the vinegar on your avo.

After the time's ticked away, give the avocados a good rinse under the tap to wash away the vinegar mix, then let them air out until they're bone dry. It's crucial to ensure they're thoroughly dried off before tucking them away; otherwise, you're inviting bacteria and mould to set up camp on your fruit.

Now, if your avocados are still a bit hard, park them in a fruit bowl, but if they're ready to eat, stash them in the fridge to halt the ripening in its tracks.

For the ultimate avocado longevity, keep them cheek by jowl with your lemons they're like best mates that keep each other from going off too fast. But steer clear of putting avocados near apples or bananas, as these will have your avos overripe in no time.

Amy said: "I have always stored my avocados in a drawer next to my lemons. It turns out that they help each other last longer. I won't get into the science behind this here, but unlike lemons, apples and bananas do not mix well with avocados. They speed up the ripening process."
