Bus Eireann announces increase

Expressway, Bus Éireann’s commercial coach service, has announced an increase in its fares starting from the end of July.

On average, fares will increase by 4.5 per cent with adult single fares increasing by a minimum of 50 cents. These changes will impact customers travelling from 29 July.

The coach service implemented the fare increase to offset the impact of rising costs on the business and to continue to incentivise online ticket purchases.

Customers who purchase their tickets online, in advance of travel, will benefit from a range of best value and discounted fares and may also guarantee their seat on their preferred Expressway service.

New Six Journey Weekly Travel Pass

Bus Éireann has launched its new Six Journey Weekly Travel Pass to offer more choice and flexibility to hybrid workers, which will be available for purchase from July 29 here. Its 10 Journey Weekly Travel Pass also remains available to customers.

Limited Early Bird Offer

A 33 per cent early bird discount is available for online ticket purchases made at least seven days in advance of travel (limited availability).

Off Peak €9.95 Travel

Customers can avail of Off Peak €9.95 single fares, which are discounted by up to 60 per cent. These fares are available from three days in advance of travel times.

Other online discounts include -

  • Five per cent online discount for all adult single tickets
  • 20 per cent online discount for all adult return tickets
  • Additional 20 per cent discount for multi-leg and family return tickets

Free Travel Pass holders

Free Travel Pass holders will continue to travel for free on all routes, with an option to prebook and guarantee their seat on a particular service for €2 per journey leg.

Young Adults and Students

Young people and students account for a considerable portion of Expressway passengers.

Young adults aged 19 – 25 years and students aged 16-18 and 26+ years will continue to only pay 50 per cent of the standard adult fare when buying online, provided they have a valid Young Adult or Student Leap Card.

Rising Costs

Speaking today, Andrew Yates, Head of Expressway, said: “Expressway, like all transport operators, continues to deal with challenges posed by significant increases across its cost base including those related to wages, utilities, maintenance materials, insurance; and in particular, fuel which is up 22 per cent year-on-year.

“In recent months major public transport operators across Ireland have increased fares, ranging from three to 14 per cent. These include Irish Rail, Dublin Bus, Luas, and a number of intercity commercial bus operators.

“We have not taken this decision lightly, but the necessary increases are required in order to maintain our current level of services and to allow us to continue to meet the needs of our customers, and the more than 200 communities that benefit from the connectivity Expressway provides.”
