The year 2024 has seen a series of environmental projects that led to the planting of thousands of trees across Malta, the government said in a statement on Tuesday.

Over 8,000 trees have been planted as part of various projects and initiatives coordinated by entities operating under the guidance of the Ministry for the Environment, Energy and Public Cleanliness. In addition to these, over 25,000 shrubs have also been planted by various Government entities.

Project Green, Ambjent Malta, the Environment and Resources Authority (ERA), and GreenServ have intensified their efforts to create more open spaces for the public and to plant indigenous trees that support local biodiversity. By doing so, all entities continue working toward a single goal: improving quality of life for families while enhancing the natural environment.

"Today, when we plant a new tree, we are making a tangible investment in the future of our communities. We are creating cleaner air and a healthier environment. More green spaces translate into a better quality of life and a more attractive country. The collective effort of planting thousands of new trees makes a real difference for our nation and for future generations," said Minister for the Environment, Energy and Public Cleanliness Miriam Dalli.

Meanwhile, around 60,000 square meters of green spaces have been opened up solely through the work of this ministry-among them major projects such as Spencer Garden in Marsa, Wied Inċita in Ħ'Attard, and Ġnien fuq il-Glażiż in Birgu.

This work underscores the government's ongoing commitment to protecting the country's environment and biodiversity.
