The Nationalist Party has once again shown its true colours: When someone criticizes Malta, it milks that criticism and makes the most of it; but when Malta is praised, its silence is deafening, the Labour Party said Friday.
Following Ridley Scott's comment about Malta, the Nationalist Party attacked Malta, the Maltese Government, and the Malta Film Commissioner Johann Grech. In an interview, Scott, the director of the film Gladiator II which was partly shot in Malta, had said that he would not visit Malta on holiday.
It was a reaction that demonstrated a deep sense of inferiority-complex and political immaturity with which the leader of the opposition and his party view our country, the PL said in a statement. This is the same Bernard Grech who, with a straight face, once said that when abroad, he was ashamed to say that he was Maltese and introduced himself as a Greek national.
Now that Ridley Scott has explained his comment as "an attempt at humour that unfortunately got lost", the PN went radio silence.
Bernard Grech and PN MP Julie Zahra have confirmed that they do have the slightest care in the world for the significant investment generated by the production of international film productions in Malta and that should they be in government, they would kill the cash rebates, destroying the film industry in the process.
The PN is consistent only on one thing: being negative about Malta and the Maltese, the PL said. In its quest for power, it is ready to cause untold harm to Malta, its people, and the economy. "They just don't care. Cheap. Shallow. Politically immature," the PL charged.
It was a Labour Government that gave a new life to the film industry in Malta, an industry that leaves millions of euros in our economy and creates new jobs, the PL said.
