Government extends deal with Y

The government has extended a deal with the YMCA, worth €2 million, to ensure that the residences run by the organisation can continue functioning.

A statement issued by the Ministry of Social Policy said that the agreement has also enabled the opening of a fourth home, named Dar Simon Soler, which means that the YMCA can offer 60 beds to people who end up homeless.

Minister Michael Falzon said such agreements are intended to help people in difficulty until they are able to return to living an independent life. "The government is here to assist and we are committed to continue showing support because we believe in social justice and solidarity," Falzon said.

YMCA CEO Anthony Camilleri said the services offered do not just include shelter, but also psychosocial assistance. Until June, some 50 people had benefited from the services offered to regain stability and return to live independently, he said.
