In light of the 60th anniversary of Malta’s Independence, a special concert will be put up by the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra that will be free to the public and broadcast on national television for those who are unable to attend.
The Culture Ministry said that on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of Malta attaining Independence on the 21st of September 1964, a concert will be put up by the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra and held at the Valletta Mediterranean Conference Centre for this special occasion. It said that this was done to allow all Maltese families to attend the free-entry concert.
The Ministry said that this concert was announced alongside other events commemorating Malta’s Independence, it was also announced that the Foundation for National Celebrations prepared a special documentary on Malta’s Independence that will be broadcast on TVM.
The Minister for National Heritage Owen Bonnici said expressed his satisfaction at the organisation of these commemorative events that celebrate important landmarks in Malta’s history. He said that it is important that these events not only look to the past but also help current generations appreciate and understand the value of national unity and identity.
Bonnici said that he is satisfied to see Festivals Malta, acting for the Committee of National Feasts, with the support of the Foundation for National Feasts and the Ministry for National Heritage, managing to create such celebrations in a professional manner that is open to everyone to keep Malta’s history alive amongst the people.
Festivals Malta Chairman Aaron Zahra said, “The [educational and accessible] aspect is very important to Festivals Malta when it comes to celebrating these important feasts that shaped Maltese history. Apart from opening the concert to the public at no cost for the 60th anniversary of Malta’s Independence, the concert will also be broadcast on TVM for those who will be unable to attend.” He said, “Once again, footage of Independence Day will be shown on local television stations as part of the educational campaign put up by Festivals Malta for National Feasts as well as a new documentary that takes a new look at stories that led to Malta gaining independence.”
Frans Agius, the Chief Executive of Festivals Malta announced more details on the concert’s programme, “This concert will involve the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra under Maestro Michael Laus with the participation of mezzo-soprano Marvic Monreal.” He said that the programme will include pieces by composers Ludwig van Beethoven, Georges Bizet, Charles Camilleri and Alexander Vella Gregory amongst others, going on to encourage attendance.
The Ministry said that the concert will be held on the 21st of September under the patronage of Her Excellency Myriam Spiteri Debono.
